Welcome to New Zealand!
Skiing in New Zealand |
Is there any sight more captivating than a fine winter’s day, breathtaking scenery and a mountain of fresh virgin snow? If you’re a skier, probably not. Then welcome to New Zealand. New Zealand has developed a deserved reputation as an international skiing destination. The season is the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere, the landscapes and scenery are out of this world, gear is easy to hire, and the queues are comparatively short. New Zealand skifields are uncrowded with plenty of opportunity for off-piste skiing, snowboarding and heli-skiing adventure.
In the North Island there are two commercial ski fields, Turoa and Whakapapa, on Mount Ruapehu. But it’s in the Southern Alps that skiing comes into its own with a large choice of fields, distractingly spectacular mountain scenery and a rich après-ski life. Thousands of skiers descend every season to the resort towns of Queenstown and Wanaka to ski the Remarkables, Cardrona, Treble Cone and Coronet Peak fields. There’s also Nordic skiing near Lake Wanaka with 25 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails. If you’re an intermediate or advanced skier, take a heli-ski tour up into the alps and get your ski high with open bowls of powder and steep, high speed chutes.
