White Water Rafting, Ladakh

White water rafting in the Ladakh region is an unparalleled experience. Pristine waters and the backdrop of the Himalayan ranges give the trip a brilliant flavour.

River rafting in Ladakh is quite unlike anywhere else in the world. It provides the best opportunity to enjoy and experience the natural beauty of the spectacular landscape with deep gorges, towering snow-capped peaks, hilltop monasteries, hillside villages, and glimpses of the unique wildlife. Ladakh offers a range of rafting options on the Indus and its major tributaries. The best stretch for professionally guided runs in white water is on the Indus between Spituk and Nimu or Saspol, which rates 4 to 5 in the international river grading scale of 1 to 6. Upstream of Spituk, the Indus has the easiest stretch up to Karu, which is ideal for basic training or "scenic floating".

The Indus River flows through India, Pakistan, China and Tibet. Originating in the Tibetan plateau of western China in the vicinity of Lake Mansarovar in Tibet Autonomous Region, the river runs a course through the Ladakh district of Jammu and Kashmir Province of India and then enters
Pakistan via the Northern Areas (Gilgit-Baltistan), to merge into the Arabian Sea near the port city of Karachi in Sindh. The total length of the river is 3,180 kilometers (1,976 miles).

In recent years, running the Indus has become an attractive option to complement with
sightseeing, and features on the itinerary of most visitors. To enjoy water rafting in Ladakh, one needs to arrive in Leh the main town of Ladakh region. Leh has an airport connected by flights with Delhi, Srinagar, Chandigarh and other major Indian towns. Leh can also be reached by road from Srinagar (424 km) and from Manali (488 km).
